Chief Medical Officer
M. Hamza Habib, MD, JD, MBA joined GOCCNJ in July 2024 as the Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Habib is deeply honored to step into this pivotal role and acknowledges the profound trust placed in him to carry forward the mission of GOCCNJ. Building upon Dr. Barile’s legacy, Dr. Habib is eager to contribute to the continued growth and success of the organization. He is committed to ensuring that GOCCNJ remains at the forefront of innovation and excellence in serious illness care.
Dr. Habib is a physician specializing in Palliative Medicine and Interventional Pain Management and serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers RWJ Medical School. He is also the Director of Outpatient Palliative Medicine and Cancer Pain Service at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Habib completed his residency at Saint Joseph Hospital, affiliated with the University of Illinois at Chicago. He then pursued a Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospital and an Interventional Pain Medicine Fellowship at the University of Utah.
In addition to his medical career, he is also an attorney, having earned his law degree from Rutgers Law School and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Habib has previously served as faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Columbia University Medical Center in clinical roles. He is academically active in the fields of pain management, Palliative Medicine, health policy related to large healthcare systems, and the clinical care of minorities in the U.S. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals.
Beyond his clinical and research work, Dr. Habib is dedicated to teaching and training medical students, residents, and fellows. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, and a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians in London, UK.
He resides in New Jersey and enjoys traveling the world and sampling local cuisines.
